TED.com recently released a list of the 20 Most Popular Talks of All Time. If you are not familiar with TED, it is a nonprofit organization that holds global conferences featuring presentations by some of the world’s greatest thinkers. Conference speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas and insights in what is referred to as “TED Talks”. TED was the brain child of architect Richard Wurman who, in 1984, observed the merging of technology, entertainment and design (hence the name TED). The first conference featured demonstrations of Sony’s compact disc and Apple’s Macintosh computer. It became an annual event held in Monterey, California beginning in 1990. Now, the main conference is held in Vancouver, British Columbia in March of each year with other events held throughout North America, Asia and Europe. Beginning in June 2006, the talks have been offered on the website TED.com free of charge. There are currently over 1,700 talks available on the website that have been collectively viewed over one billion times. If you go to the site, be prepared to spend some time watching a number of these videos. Just like Lay’s Potato Chips, you can’t stop at just one!
